The question "Does campaigning actually work?" is often uttered in moments of frustration and cynicism when progress seems impossible. However, the signing of the Arms Trade Treaty at the UN on 2 April 2013 proved that campaigning can indeed produce positive results.
As a member of the Oxfam team working on this campaign, I contributed communication ideas and designed materials since its inception a decade earlier (I was there since the launch of the launch report, 'Shattered lives'). The gallery of campaign messages displayed at the event showcased the range and impact of our efforts.
Anna Macdonald, a key driving force behind the campaign, spoke at the press event held at the Foreign Office. Her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, alongside those of organisations like Oxfam and Amnesty International, made this milestone achievement possible.
The presence of Alistair Burt MP, who had invested countless hours into pushing through the treaty, demonstrated the value and impact of collective action.
This event is a reminder that when people come together with a shared vision and purpose, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
